Premenopause – The Beginning
Menopause is a phase in life that spans over several years. Menopause has different phases that slowly transition a woman’s life and vary upon the person individually.
The pre-menopause stage refers to a period of two to seven years and occurs before the last menstrual period. Following it is the stage of menopause which is the one year phase after the last period. Therefore, pre-menopause is the time in which the female body begins to undergo a change in hormones though the last menstrual period has not yet occurred. During this time, the first symptoms of menopause can show up.
Process of Premenopause
Pre-menopause begins approximately between the ages 38 and 45. This is when the production of the sex hormone progesterone slowly decreases, though, bleeding still occurs during this time. However, menstrual periods become more and more irregular as ovulation no longer occurs every month.
Symptoms of Premenopause
Often times, women experience a shortened cycle time with the onset of menopause. Women will often have their periods at intervals of three weeks instead of four weeks, and this happens because of the irregular ovulatory phase. A woman will have both cycles with and without ovulation. When especially short cycles occur during pre-menopause, this is a sure sign that a cycle has skipped ovulation.
During this time, not only the cycle length changes. The duration of periods will also vary. Some women have hardly any bleeding while other women suffer from very heavy bleeding.
Pre-menopause is the phase of menopause in which progesterone is deficient. The hormone progesterone is formed in the ovaries of the corpus luteum and is the hormone that triggers menstruation after ovulation. If ovulation fails, the body will produce significantly less progesterone.
Hormonal changes may become apparent later on in menopause, but estrogen is highly dominant during premenopause. This means that the common symptoms of premenopause are typically derived from estrogen dominance. Due to the lack of progesterone, expect an increase in water retention as this is a common symptom of estrogen dominance. Due to estrogen overload and lack of liver detox function, weight gain is also particularly noticeable in the abdominal area. This can be alleviated by boosting metabolism and a simple aspirin can alleviate many inflammatory symptoms. Other possible symptoms of pre-menopause include joint pain, hot flashes and mood swings.
